What
To Do If You Have Found a Cat
Does
it require veterinary treatment?
If the cat is sick or injured can you get
it to a vets? You will not be
expected to pay for a stray cat. The
RSPCA are the ones to call if you cannot get to a vet on 08705 555 999,
they will come out to collect a sick or injured animal. If it is possible
to contain the animal either by placing it in a carrier or just keeping it
in your bathroom it would be helpful. You can also call Cats Protection. Please tell
everyone you report it to if you think the cat requires veterinary treatment
Is it
really lost?
It is
important to establish whether the cat is really lost. If the feline is
friendly and seems well groomed, well fed and cared for, the chances are
it has a home. If it seems hungry, uncared for, scruffy and keeps
hanging around it is probably a stray. Ask around all your neighbours,
someone may have acquired a new cat that you are not familiar with.
We provide paper collars so if the cat is agreeable you could
place this around it's neck. Write a message on it asking if the cat belongs to anyone, put
your own or Cat Protection's phone number on and ask to be contacted
If it is
genuinely lost
Contact us and give
a good description of the cat – it’s colour, markings and special
distinguishing features. Try to establish sex and approximate age, colour
of eyes, area found and date when first appeared.
Report it to as many cat rescues as possible, also local vets.
The owner may have reported it lost and the earlier reported the
greater the chance of the cat being reunited with its owner, but please
don't expect any organisation to collect the cat immediately, like us,
most are full to capacity and you may have to wait until a place becomes
available. If it seems hungry and thin, please feed it. Consider taking
the cat to the vet to be scanned for a microchip, which may identify its
owner
Advertise
It is important that
this is done before we place the cat on our waiting list to come in for
rehoming in case it's rightful owner can be traced. Make a small notice or
a poster saying, "cat found" with a very brief description. It
is not a good idea to give a full description of the cat in adverts for
obvious reasons. there are people out there looking for cats for a number
of sinister purposes so do not make it easy for them. If someone calls up
about the cat, ask him or her to describe the cat to you so
you know that they are the genuine owner. run off several copies of your
notice or poster. If you have no access to a printer you can use your
nearest shop with a photocopier and put them in local shops, take-aways,
post office, pet shops, vets and other suitable places. Also place adverts
in the lost and found section of your local paper and check the lost
adverts regularly. Consider informing out of town cat rescues in case the
cat has travelled far from home
Can you keep the cat?
Can you give the cat
a home? Or at least a short
term one until we are able to help. We
have a waiting list and may not be able to take the cat in immediately.
In the meantime if you could feed the cat, put out water for it to
drink and give it some shelter that would be a great help to us.
