How It All Began

Volunteer from the pastOn 16th May 1927 a meeting of cat lovers was held at Claxton Hall in London at which it was resolved: "that a society be dedicated exclusively to promoting the interests of cats and that it be named the Cats Protection League". The name was shortened to Cats Protection in 1999 but our purpose remains the same as it was all those years ago

Cat's Protection has come a long way from it's small beginnings in 1927. It was a time when cats were viewed with indifference - as animals that looked after themselves, often falling prey to terrible cruelty, neglect and starvation. The concern of a few cat lovers heralded the beginning of an organisation that, today is the largest feline charity in the United Kingdom

From its humble beginnings in 1927, Cats Protection has experienced phenomenal growth, reflecting the fact that the cat is now the UK's  favourite pet with 7.7 million domestic catsCats Protection now has over 260 branches and 29 shelters nationwide. The South Wirral branch was formed in 2002.

It's an exciting time for Cats Protection, our headquarters has now moved to the National Cat Centre (NCC) in Sussex. For the first time all the elements of the charity - cat adoption, veterinary care, education and administrative support - are together on one site. Providing on-site veterinary attention for all new admissions and resident felines, this facility will go a long way to furthering the health and well being of CP rescue cats. The Centre also provides onsite cat welfare training for vets. Our Headquarters will be able to pass on the very latest feline welfare information to all the dedicated volunteers who work with cats throughout the UK.
