Adopt a Cat

Ginger tabbyTo view some of the cats currently waiting for a loving new home you can visit our Adoption gallery

A cat or a kitten makes a very worthwhile pet. If you are thinking of taking a rescue cat into your home, then you are actively helping Cats Protection in its work. There are many more cats than there are homes available. Not all of them are waifs and strays, we find new loving homes for cats when an elderly owner dies and there is no one else to care for the cat; a cat has kittens and the owners can't look after them; cats are saved from unsafe places and cruelty; people separate, move house and can no longer keep their cat; a cat is found wandering the streets and the owner cannot be found

HOME CHECKERS NEEDED FOR CH60-66 AREA. also fosterers needed,
including short-term emergency fosterers

 In Praise of Older Cats

If you are thinking of giving a cat a home we hope you will consider the many gentle and loving older cats that need a second chance for a happy home. They do not ask for much, a warm fireside, a bowl of food and a little love in their twilight years, they give so much in return. Read about the benefits of
adopting a "Golden Oldie"

Adoption Procedure

If you would like to adopt one of our cats or kittens please contact us and we will arrange for one of our Home Visitors to meet with you in your home. This home visit is a necessary and important part of our procedure to ensure that our cats will be happy and secure in their new homes

If you have already chosen your cat, you will be referred to its fosterer. As we do not have a central shelter all our cats are cared for in individual foster homes. You can visit to meet your chosen cat and see if it is the one for you, and find out background details about the cat you are adopting

If you are looking for a particular cat you may prefer to go on our waiting list until one becomes available

We try to match people with the right cat that is most suitable for their family environment. For example, some cats need a quiet home and therefore would not be happy in homes with young children

Settling in

Cats, like people are all different and what suits one may not suit another. It can take time for your cat to settle - please be patient, but if after a while you find it does not seem to be settling in, contact us, we are always here to help with advice

Introducing your new cat to other pets

Two cats sharing a bowl of milkWhen you bring your new cat home, allow it to explore it's new home before you introduce it to other animals. supervise initial encounters, there will be hostility to begin with. Cats are territorial animals and will see the new cat as an interloper. social adjustments have to be made but only the animals can work these out. It may take a few weeks but eventually the pets will adjust to each other
